Tragic dog finally adopted after 500 days – only to be returned after one week
A dog that waited for a new home for more than 500 days was returned just one week later, leaving people on the internet heartbroken.
Drogo, a two-year-old American pit bull, had been at the Austin Animal Center in Texas since March 2022 after his owner was evicted. The owner never went to claim him, Newsweek reports.
The adorable pooch had no luck for 16 months despite being house and leash trained, and was even overlooked for adoption at an event held by the shelter.

Things finally looked to have turned around for Drogo when a family came forward and adopted him in July. However, just one week later the shelter shared a heart-breaking update on TikTok.
Writing over a video of Drogo, the shelter said: "When you wait 500 days to find a home and then get returned after one week.
"Shelter dogs need time to adjust to a new home. Drogo didn't even get the chance.
"Now he's back at the shelter again waiting for his real forever family."
The shelter added staff were "crushed" and "devastated" by the news. "It's not fair," a worker wrote.
Speaking to Newsweek, Kelsey Cler from Austin Animal Center explained Drogo was returned after he "nipped" the adopter. She added that he appears "bummed to be back" and that "there hasn't been any interest".
Drogo's adoption page describes him as a "charmer" who "meets people so gently that it is difficult not to fall in love with him at the first encounter".
"This affectionate boy is dreaming of a home where he can get unlimited pets and love from his people," the page adds.
Drogo is still up for adoption (here) at the time of writing. Any would-be new families will not be required to pay an adoption fee.
TikTok users flooded the comments section with tear-jerking messages of support for the pup.
One person said: "Some people just have no patience. I’m praying your 4ever home is coming. [sic]"
Another said: "Such a handsome boy with a great smile. Please someone help him!"
A third said: "How heart-breaking. I would totally adopt him if I could. I pray his forever family gets him soon."
