While conditions would usually be 17-18 degrees Celsius for this time of year, a warm patch has blasted past this and looks set to extend into the weekend. Temperatures could peak on Saturday at 23-24 degrees for south-eastern parts of England, while Scotland could also experience heat in the low 20s.
BBC weather presenter Matt Taylor forecasts warm conditions, for large parts of England, this afternoon.
He said: “For much of England and Wales lighter winds, bit of cloud in the west, lots of sunshine to eastern areas.
“And it’s here where, far from autumn, it feels like late summer.
“Temperatures 22-23 degrees, we should only be at around 17-18 degrees as an absolute max.”
Conditions will be quite different across western Scotland, which should expect heavy rain this afternoon.
Torrential downpours are expected from Aberdeenshire in the east, to Argyll and Bute in the west.
Western parts of Northern Ireland are also likely to be hit by rain, along with blustery conditions.
Overnight the band of rain will move south, bringing patchy rain and cloud further into England, though this should clear early on Thursday morning.
In Scotland rough conditions are expected overnight, with thunder and possibly gale-force winds hitting northern areas.
Conditions will remain warm for southern and eastern parts of England on Thursday.
During the mid-afternoon, temperatures of 23C should be expected for London, along with 22C for Bristol, 17C for Liverpool and 16C for Edinburgh.
North-eastern parts of Scotland should expect cooler conditions, along with blustery wind and some rain.

Further south south-west Scotland could see some patchy rain, but the sun should manage to break through at points.
Temperatures are likely to peak on Saturday, when an unseasonal warm 24C could be recorded in England.
Mr Taylor said: “The surge of warm air comes back again as we go into the weekend, coming up with south to south-easterly winds across the country.

“That means we’ll see temperatures maybe into the low 20s in eastern Scotland on Friday, and some sunny spells.
“But there will be cloud and patchy rain across western Scotland, some thicker cloud across north-west England and Northern Ireland at times.
“Many having a dry and bright day, best of which [for] southern and eastern areas [where] 23-24 degrees Celsius certainly possible.
“And that warmth will continue into the weekend for England and Wales, just one or two showers on Sunday but there’s always a chance of a few more outbreaks of rain in the north-west of the UK as we go into next week.”
There are currently no Met Office weather warnings in place for any part of Britain, extending up until September 28.
Similarly there are no flood warnings, of any severity, in place across England.
