UK weather warnings in force ahead of bone-chillingly cold and icy weekend

The UK is facing a weekend of freezing fog and bitter frost as it comes off the back of an Arctic blast.

The country has been plunged into snow storms and temperatures reaching as low as -14C in places, and is currently under a rare Level 3 Cold Weather Alert due to the low temperatures and dangers it can bring.

The warning was issued by the UK Health Security Agency, with Brits being told to “check on family, friends and relatives” because of dangers the cold snap may bring.

And now, just when most of us thought it might warm up this weekend, the officials at the Met Office have warned of new dangers ahead.

A new report from the weather experts states that most of England and Wales will be hit with “sharp frost and some freezing fog” overnight tonight (January 20).

They add: “Freezing fog patches may be slow to clear, (with) cloudy, windy and milder (weather) in the North West with some rain at times.”

The freezing fog could cause serious danger to drivers, too.

Dale Hipkiss, National Network Manager at National Highways, said; “Freezing conditions bring so many hazards such as ice and snow and take every possible step to understand your journey in advance and allow lots of extra time when travelling to prepare for the unexpected.

“It is therefore always important to plan ahead for your journey, listen to the weather forecasts, and if weather conditions become challenging, adjust your driving behaviour and take extra care.”

According to satellite imagery from the Met Desk's WX Charts, the vast majority of the UK will remain dry and cold for most of the next seven days, although a slight snow shower will hit parts of Wales and the Midlands on Monday, early afternoon.

That should, however, have cleared up just a few hours later – leaving the UK facing moderately cold weather for the rest of January.
