Ukraine’s Matrix-inspired spy hunters sniffing out Russian ‘cockroaches’ in Kyiv

A group of civilian Ukrainians have taken inspiration from hit film The Matrix and are hunting enemy spies in their home country.

Based in the capital of Kyiv, the group have been out hunting possible Russian spies.

Speaking to the New York Post, nurse Victoria Kramarenko, 55, is one of the leaders.

She said: “We have a lot of provocateurs in the city, and yesterday I had two of them arrested from the streets.

“Every few blocks in the downtown area, we see them, and they especially watch for movements of ambulances or areas where they see a lot of assault rifles.

"Now, there are just so many of them. They are like cockroaches spreading.”

“Often you can tell because they have special Russian accents, showing they are from the self-declared Republics of Donetsk or Luhansk provinces.

“Many Ukrainians speak Russian, but the accents are different.”

Whenever curfews are introduced into the city, they normally come with a warning to state that anyone found on the streets will be treated as a spy.

But it now appears that police are working with local groups to find these actual Russian invaders.

Another member of the group is computer programmer Tatiana.

Andriy Liakhovych, the Presidential Office's military coordinator said: Especially in a time like now, if a person asks too many questions, is too curious or cannot get their bearings in local settings, it is best to exercise cautions.

“They (the saboteurs) are everywhere; we know that.

“They have been here for five or six years.

“But those who came here to destroy our president, their plans have been destroyed.

It is not clear how many Russian spies have been caught, or what happens to them when they are captured.

However, according to the NYP, one anonymous official said that many of the the ones caught so far are from the Chechnya region.
