Speaking to Trevor Philips on Sky news, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the Coronavirus lockdown date of June 21 could still go ahead despite concern amongst Brits they could be kept lockdown for longer than promised. Fears have risen in recent weeks as the Indian variant has taken hold across the UK sending infections rising but hospitalisations remain low with deaths plumetting as well.

The Health Secretary said: “It is too early to make a final decision.

“The Prime Minister and I and the team will be looking at all of the data this week.

He added: “The majority of people going into hospital now are unvaccinated.

“It shows that the vaccine protects you from going into hospital.

He added: “Exactly when we can take that step is the big question.

“We are not saying no to the 21st June at this point.”

“We will keep watching the data for another week and critically watching that link from the number of cases to the number of people that end up in hospital.

“And it is absolutely true that the number of people ending up in hospital is broadly flat at the moment whereas the number of cases is rising.”
