The Chancellor was on Sky News to discuss the Government’s strategy for rebuilding the UK economy following the coronavirus pandemic. Rishi Sunak was optimistic that Britain would mount a strong recovery and insisted the country’s economy was in a stronger position compared with many European counterparts such as Italy, Spain and Germany. His remarks come amid mounting speculation around what measures may be included in Mr Sunak’s upcoming March budget.

Mr Sunak told Sky News: “What you find is our performance is very much in line with all our international peers.”

“Still a bit worse though, I’ve looked at this,” interrupted Sky’s Economics Editor Ed Conway.

“Actually it is a little bit better than places like Canada, Italy, Spain and Germany,” replied the Chancellor.

“It is definitely in line to slightly better.”
