The former President released the statement on Monday criticising the leading American health professionals. His comments came after Dr Birx and Dr Fauci spoke to CNN about the Trump administration’s mishandling of the coronavirus pandemic during his time at the White House.

Dr Birx served as Mr Trump’s coronavirus response coordinator.

The former President’s statement read: “Based on their interviews, I felt it was time to speak up about Dr Fauci and Dr Birx, two self-promoters trying to reinvent history to cover up their bad instincts and faulty recommendations, which I fortunately almost always overturned.”

He claimed the pair had “bad policy decisions” which would have put “millions of lives at risk”.

Mr Trump added: “We developed American vaccines by an American President in record time, nine months, which is saving the entire world.

“We bought billions of dollars of these vaccines on a calculated bet that they would work, perhaps the most important bet in the history of the world.

“Dr Fauci and Dr Birx moved far too slowly, and if it were up to them we’d currently be locked in our basements as our country suffered through a financial depression.”

Dr Birx appeared on CNN to discuss the US COVID-19 death toll which has reached more than 549,000.

She said: “I look at it this way. The first time, we have an excuse. There were about 100,000 deaths that came from the original surge.”

Dr Birx added how “all the rest of” the surges “in my mind, could have been mitigated or decreased substantially” if the previous administration acted differently.

Dr Fauci also appeared in the CNN documentary COVID WAR: The Pandemic Doctors Speak Out.

He took credit for the quick development of the Covid jab, which Mr Trump disputed in his statement.

Dr Fauci said: “When I saw what happened in New York City, almost overrunning of our health care system, it was like, ‘Oh my goodness.

“And that’s when it became very clear that the decision we made on January the 10th — to go all out and develop a vaccine — may have been the best decision that I’ve ever made with regard to an intervention as director of the institute.”
