Initial reports from citizens claimed the men had not been behaving in ways becoming of monks, prompting suspicion.

The monks drew the attention of local people when they refused the usual gifts like food and water they tried to give them.

They noticed that the "monks" were only interested in money and weren’t looking for any other kind of donation.

Police approached the mountainside temple but were spotted by the men who fled, climbing the mountain and into hiding.

Police estimated that they thought there were around 10 men involved in total.
