Alexander Darchiev, director of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s North American Department, said in an interview with the TASS news agency he “would like to mention the legislative initiative currently being discussed in Congress to declare Russia a country sponsor of terrorism”, after Senator Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican, and Senator Dick Blumenthal, a Connecticut Democrat, urged the Biden Administration to press ahead with the designation. Mr Darchiev said: “If passed, it would mean that Washington would have to cross the point of no return, with the most serious collateral damage to bilateral diplomatic relations, up to their lowering or even breaking them off.” He added: “The US side has been warned.” His comments came as Ukrainian Armed Forces Chief General Valeri Zaluzhnyi claimed Ukrainian men had “destroyed” one-fifth of Russia’s ground forces since the war began nearly six months ago.
