On Sunday at around 22:40 (GMT) a car ploughed through a Christmas parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin. In a press conference shortly after the incident, Police Chief Dan Thompson and Fire Chief Steven Howard said there were “some fatalities.”

Mr Howard said: “We do not have any detailed information on the fatalities at this time.”

Around 23 people were taken to hospital after the red SUV drove into participants walking in Waukesha’s Christmas parade, according to Waukesha chief of police.

Despite reports the driver of the vehicle fired shots from the car, Mr Thompson said: “At this time, we do not believe there were any [shots] fired from the vehicle.

“We believe that the officer discharged their firearm to stop the vehicle.”

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers tweeted on Monday after the incident offering his thoughts and prayers to the people of Waukesha.

Governor Evers said he and his wife, Kathy Evers, are “praying for Waukesha tonight.”

He said: “Kathy and I are praying for Waukesha tonight and all the kids, families, and community members affected by this senseless act.

“I’m grateful for the first responders and folks who acted quickly to help, and we are in contact with local partners as we await more information.”

Governor Tony Evers is an American politician who has served as the 46th governor of Wisconsin since January 7, 2019.

The 70-year-old previously served as the Wisconsin Superintendent of Public Instruction for ten years.

Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin, 59, responded to the reports by writing on Twitter: “The horrific violence at the Waukesha Christmas Parade is just heartbreaking.

“Please keep the victims in your prayers tonight.”
